Psychotherapy
Spiritual Abuse,
Religious Trauma &
Toxic Sacred Spaces

Spirituality comes in many forms and are as unique as the people seeking it. Whatever your belief system and world view - this important area of human existence, has long been considered a positive resource for enlightenment, compassion, love and healing.
Spirituality, Religion and other Sacred Spaces (religious or non), are the places we attend to connect, support and cope with the very real pain of living our lives in places of worship, fellowship or community.
We expect spirituality and/or religion to support us unconditionally with grace, knowledge, compassion and positive regard for our mental safety.
We never expect to be emotionally or mentally injured.
We never expect the teachings could be a tool to manipulate, control or oppress.

Whether it's a religious belief system for generations of the family-
A spiritual lifestyle promising transcendence by following a certain path..
Or a holistic wellness community with the promise of optimal health and enlightenment.
What once was supportive, now emerges a complex and isolating form of mental health pain that may severely intensify anxiety, depression and (if left unsupported) be a source traumatic experience and PTSD.
We are specially trained to listen with a safe, neutral ear..
We are specially trained to help you navigate your personal understanding, seek your own insight and find mentally safe ways to cope.

Combined with a decade of personal experience, and a generation of family experience of living in and leaving these high control groups.
Our therapist continues to participate in a range of specialized training and focused study on this emerging mental health topic now known to adversely impact mental health and wellness.

Our Ethical Approach to Religious Trauma and Spiritual Abuse:
We are committed to the autonomy of all persons' belief systems and chosen lifestyles. Willow Rock Psychotherapy is not a religious based counselling service (eg. Christian counselling) nor an alternative holistic healing service, and in no way do we promote or encourage prescribed doctrine or dogma of any kind.
We hold the people who work with us in unconditional positive regard and are committed to a stance of non- judgment, respect and inclusivity.
